Ko Hong, also known as “The Room Island,” is part of a stunning group of 42 limestone islands situated at the edge of Tan Bok Khorani National Park in Phang Nga Bay, Krabi, Thailand. It is the largest and most breathtaking island in the group and is widely considered one of the most enchanting spots along Thailand’s Andaman coast.
The island is home to several caves where locals climb to gather bird nests, which are used to make the famous bird nest soup. Located just north of Ao Nang Beach, Ko Hong is easily accessible and is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to southern Thailand, especially in the Krabi area.
The name “Ko Hong” means “The Room Island,” which comes from the natural caves that have eroded over time to form a stunning lagoon in the center of the island. This lagoon has a narrow opening to the sea, and during high tide, visitors can access it by boat or kayak to experience its crystal-clear turquoise waters. The lagoon is only about a meter deep, so during low tide, boats cannot enter, making it important to check the tide schedules when planning a visit.
Ko Hong has one beautiful beach, Pelay Beach, which is arguably the most picturesque beach in Thailand. With soft white sand, clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs teeming with fish, it’s a truly stunning spot. On the island, there is a small restaurant/café and restrooms for visitors, but overnight stays are not permitted, making it a destination for day trips only. Kayaks are available for rent.
In the magnificent Krabi and Phang Nga region, where breathtaking views abound, Ko Hong stands out as a gem, offering visitors a peaceful and unforgettable experience. The island’s emerald lagoon, pristine beach, and dramatic limestone cliffs make it a top destination for anyone exploring this beautiful part of Thailand.
